At Maryland Judo & Jiu-Jitsu we take learning self-defense seriously therefore we are not affiliated with any type of online university or program. Lessons are taught live onsite and overseen by a certified Relson Gracie Black Belt!
Relson Graice seminar at Gracie Maryland Columbia
The Maryland Judo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy is proud to be the first Relson Gracie Academy in the Baltimore area, and we are devoted to preserving the authenticity of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as taught by Relson. Our curriculum differs from others in its focus on the self-defense aspects of Jiu-Jitsu, as opposed to those who teach it solely for sports, such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions or mixed-martial-arts contests. Still, our curriculum is effective at training competitors. In fact, Relson Gracie was the first person to produce a non-Brazilian World Jiu-Jitsu Champion. Many of our students compete and win in local and national Jiu-Jitsu competitions.

We strive to make sure our Jiu-Jitsu curriculum is accessible to people regardless of age, physical fitness, or experience. Safety is also a primary concern. Other gyms might treat newcomers as punching bags, but we want our students to work on and improve their skills without risking injury. We love Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, and we want you to have a great experience in the arts.
Relson Gracie says that his family's Jiu-Jitsu is a complete system of self-defense, and that his students should be able to defend themselves in any situation. "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu," as a mere sport, is a beautiful way to express Jiu-Jitsu, but does not encompass the entire art, which is designed to give confidence and a means of defense to its practitioner.
"The Jiu-Jitsu that I created was designed to give the weak ones a chance to face the heavy and strong." –Helio Gracie
